iCloud Alternative
A True Mac Backup
Alternative to iCloud
iCloud syncs your files. Capsule Backup protects your entire Mac with native Time Machine backups in the cloud — including full OS restore via Migration Assistant.
Sync vs Backup: Why It Matters
They sound similar, but they solve very different problems.
Sync (iCloud)
- Mirrors files across devices
- Delete a file? Gone everywhere
- No system-level snapshots
- Cannot restore your entire Mac
- Changes propagate instantly — including mistakes
Backup (Capsule)
- Versioned snapshots via Time Machine
- Delete a file? Recover from any snapshot
- Full system-level backup
- Restore your entire Mac via Migration Assistant
- Changes are preserved — every version is safe
iCloud is excellent for keeping your files, photos, and settings in sync across Apple devices. But sync is not a substitute for backup. When something goes wrong — accidental deletion, ransomware, hardware failure — you need a complete, versioned backup to recover from. That's what Capsule Backup provides.

What Makes Capsule Backup Different
Native Time Machine
No third-party software to install. Connect to your Capsule Backup volume directly from macOS System Settings and let Time Machine do what it was built to do.
Full OS Restore
Lost your Mac or upgrading to a new one? Use Migration Assistant to restore everything — apps, settings, user accounts, documents — exactly as they were.
Enterprise Security
SMB3 encrypted transport, Time Machine encryption at rest, IP whitelisting, and an included VPN. Your backups are protected in transit and on disk.
Choose Your Data Region
Pick where your backups are stored — Germany, Finland, or the USA. Meet compliance requirements and keep data close to your team.
1 Gbps, No Limits
Backups run on 1 Gbps fiber with no bandwidth caps. Your initial backup completes fast and incremental backups stay small thanks to Time Machine.
Unlimited Devices

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Capsule Backup and iCloud at the same time?
Absolutely. They complement each other well. Use iCloud for file sync and photo access across your devices, and Capsule Backup for full Time Machine backups with complete OS restore capability. Many of our users run both.
Does iCloud do Time Machine backups?
No. iCloud does not support Time Machine backups. iCloud syncs files, photos, and settings across your Apple devices, but it does not create versioned system snapshots. To get Time Machine backups in the cloud, you need a service like Capsule Backup that provides an SMB3 network volume compatible with Time Machine.
Can I restore my entire Mac from iCloud?
No. iCloud can restore some settings and files if you sign in with your Apple ID on a new Mac, but it cannot restore your full system — apps, configurations, user accounts, and local files are not included. With Capsule Backup, you use Migration Assistant to restore everything from your Time Machine backup, just like restoring from a local drive.
Is Capsule Backup harder to set up than iCloud?
Capsule Backup takes about five minutes to set up. There's no software to install — you connect to your backup volume via Finder using SMB3 and select it as your Time Machine destination in System Settings. After the initial setup, backups run automatically in the background, just like a local Time Machine drive.
Why is Capsule Backup more expensive than iCloud?
Capsule Backup and iCloud serve different purposes. iCloud is consumer file sync; Capsule Backup is a dedicated backup infrastructure with 1 Gbps fiber, dedicated storage volumes, SMB3 transport, VPN access, IP whitelisting, and a 99.9% SLA. The pricing reflects the enterprise-grade infrastructure and unlimited device support included with every plan.
