Mac backup for business →Why Mac Users Switch to a Cloud Time Machine Backup
Most cloud backup services were built for Windows and ported to Mac as an afterthought. They install a proprietary background agent that scans your disk, runs as a daemon, and backs up files — not your operating system. When something breaks, you can recover a document, but you cannot recover your Mac. You still have to reinstall macOS, every app, every plugin licence, and rebuild your environment manually.
Capsule Backup takes the opposite approach: instead of inventing a new backup engine, we give Time Machine — Apple's own backup system, built into every Mac since 2008 — somewhere to send its data. The result is a real cloud Time Capsule. Your Mac sees us as a network drive in Finder. Time Machine takes care of incremental hourly snapshots, file versioning, encryption, and the integration with Migration Assistant. We just handle the storage, the encryption-in-transit (SMB3, mandatory), and the data sovereignty (Germany, Finland, or USA — your choice).
The practical difference shows up the first time you need a restore. With a file-sync product, you spend a day rebuilding. With Capsule Backup, you boot a new Mac, point Migration Assistant at your cloud volume, and an hour or two later you are working again — with every app, every account, every dotfile, every preference exactly as it was. That is the kind of backup most Mac users assumed they already had with iCloud, only to discover too late that iCloud was never designed to do this.
And because every plan is storage-based with unlimited devices, your second Mac, your partner's Mac, and your Mac mini home server all back up to the same plan. No per-device fees. No agents to license. No admin console to maintain. Just five minutes of setup and Time Machine running quietly in the cloud from then on.

Common Questions
A few of the questions Mac users ask before signing up. See the full FAQ for everything else.
How is this different from iCloud?
iCloud syncs files but doesn't provide full-disk Time Machine backups. Capsule Backup gives you a complete Time Machine backup in the cloud, including full OS restore capability via Migration Assistant. You can restore your entire Mac, not just files.
Do I need to install any software?
No. Capsule Backup is a network drive that mounts natively in Finder using the SMB3 protocol. You connect to it the same way you'd connect to any network share, then point Time Machine at it.
Can I restore my entire Mac from a backup?
Yes. You can use Migration Assistant or boot into Time Machine Recovery to restore your complete system — apps, settings, files, everything.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes, on two levels. SMB3 encrypts all data in transit. Additionally, you can enable Time Machine's built-in encryption to encrypt your backup data at rest.
