Everything Time Machine.
Now in the Cloud.
Capsule Backup extends what you already know and trust about Time Machine — without installing anything.
Native Time Machine Integration
Time Machine is Apple's built-in backup solution, included with every Mac since 2008. It performs automatic hourly backups, maintains a complete history of your files, and makes restoring as simple as scrolling through time.
Capsule Backup gives Time Machine a cloud destination. Your Mac sees it as a standard network disk — because it is one. No agents, no daemons, no proprietary software consuming resources in the background.
- Automatic hourly backups
- File versioning with timeline browsing
- Incremental backups (only changed files)
- System-level integration with macOS
Full OS Restore
Unlike file-sync services, Capsule Backup stores a complete image of your Mac. When disaster strikes — or when you simply upgrade to a new machine — you can restore everything.
Use Migration Assistant during initial setup of a new Mac, or boot into Time Machine Recovery to restore in place. Your apps, settings, accounts, and files come back exactly as they were.
- Full system restore via Migration Assistant
- Point-in-time recovery (PITR)
- Seamlessly migrate to a new Mac
- Restore individual files or entire volumes
Unlimited Devices
Most backup services charge per device. Capsule Backup charges for storage only. Back up your MacBook, your iMac, your Mac Mini, your Mac Studio — all on a single plan.
Each Mac creates its own .backupbundle on the shared volume. Time Machine handles this natively — no configuration needed.
- One plan, all your Macs
- Storage-based pricing, not per-device
- Each Mac maintains its own backup history
- Perfect for families and small teams
Enterprise-Grade Security
Every connection uses SMB3 with mandatory encryption in transit. Your data is encrypted before it even reaches our servers.
Enable Time Machine encryption for at-rest protection. Add IP whitelisting to restrict access to trusted networks. Or use our included VPN (WireGuard or OpenVPN) for maximum security.
- SMB3 encrypted transport (mandatory)
- Time Machine native encryption
- IP whitelisting (beta)
- WireGuard & OpenVPN included
- DoD 5220.22-M data destruction on cancellation
Choose Your Region
Choose where your backup data is physically stored. Pick the region closest to you for the best performance, or select based on data residency requirements.

1 Gbps Fiber. No Throttling.
Every Capsule Backup server is connected via 1 Gbps fiber. There are no speed limits, no bandwidth caps, and no throttling — regardless of your plan.
Time Machine performs incremental backups after the initial full backup, meaning only changed files are transferred. This makes hourly backups fast and efficient, even over the internet.
- 1 Gbps fiber connectivity on all servers
- No bandwidth limits or throttling
- Incremental backups minimize transfer size
- Theoretical: 500 GB initial backup in ~1 hour

Features FAQ
Does Capsule Backup work with all versions of Time Machine?
Capsule Backup works with Time Machine on macOS Monterey (12) and newer. These versions support SMB3 network shares natively, which is what Capsule Backup uses.
Can I browse my backups without restoring the whole system?
Yes. Time Machine lets you browse your backup timeline and restore individual files, folders, or even specific versions of a file — directly from the Time Machine interface on your Mac.
What happens if my internet connection drops during a backup?
Time Machine handles interruptions gracefully. When your connection is restored, Time Machine automatically resumes the backup from where it left off. No data is lost or corrupted.
Can I use Capsule Backup alongside a local Time Machine disk?
Absolutely. macOS supports multiple Time Machine destinations. You can back up to both a local external drive and your Capsule Backup cloud drive simultaneously for maximum protection.
How fast is the initial backup?
With our 1 Gbps fiber connection, theoretical speeds reach up to 125 MB/s. A 500 GB initial backup could complete in about 1-2 hours depending on your upload speed and the number of files.
